I. General information
1. General
We hope to use this data privacy statement to explain how we collect, process and use personal data in the context of the Alumni Website of the Master of Advanced Studies ETH Mediation in Peace Processes (MAS ETH MPP).
We are subject to Swiss data privacy law, in particular the Federal Act on Data Protection (DSG), as well as any applicable foreign data privacy specifications. Depending on circumstances, this includes the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union (EU), which is why we make reference to this below. The GDPR only applies if the applicable law is mandatory and only to the data processing processes and people affected by it.
Throughout this data privacy statement, wherever possible we use plural forms of nouns and pronouns to cover all genders.
We may adapt this data privacy statement at any time without prior notice. The current version published on our website applies at all times.
2. Responsibility for data privacy matters

3. Legal basis for data processing
This data privacy statement conforms to the requirements of the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (DSG), the associated Data Protection Ordinance (DSV) as well as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union. The type and scope of applicable legislation depends on the individual case in question. Foreign data privacy law only applies if the applicable law is mandatory and only to the data processing processes and people affected by it.
When processing personal data, we follow the data privacy requirements applicable in that particular case.
The processing of personal data must not unlawfully harm the character of the user. Such data processing must therefore satisfy the processing principles of data privacy legislation and/or must be legitimately possible on the basis of a justification. In particular, we have justification to process personal data if the processing:
- is based on consent. If the processing of personal data is based on your consent, we will provide you with separate and transparent information of this. You can withdraw your consent to data processing going forward using the functions provided for this purpose (e.g. delete your account). Once your consent has been revoked in this way, an administrator will process your request and once approved, we will cease to process the relevant data immediately.
- is required to comply with domestic and foreign statutory provisions.
4. Copyright
This website offers an online library of mediation-related literature and related resources, based on the updated reading lists of the MAS ETH MPP program per program cycle.
All online documents, videos and other materials and web pages as well as their parts are protected by copyright law. Usage is exclusively permitted within the scope of legally permitted private use. It is therefore permissible to copy them and print them out only for private, scientific, and noncommercial use.
Without prior written consent from ETH Zurich, it is not permissible for the documents and web pages and parts thereof to be either copied or stored on other servers, input into news groups or online services, or stored on USB sticks or other data carriers. This applies in particular to the ETH Zurich logo.
Intermediate storage in a cache or on a proxy server to optimise access speed is permitted.
The citation of the documents and web pages with a correct statement of the source and the setting of links to our web site is expressly allowed.
It is the responsibility of the users to clarify the copyright situation, especially if they upload or contribute materials in courses, works or online etc. In the event of any copyright violations, the MAS ETH MPP program will not accept any liability.
5. Collection and processing of personal data
5.1. General
Our MAS ETH MPP program is organizationally located within the School for Continuing Education at ETH Zurich. We are no separate legal entity. Do not mistake us for the ETH Alumni Association, which has its own legal entity. We do not have and we are not an actual alumni “association”. We only offer this Alumni Website for MAS ETH MPP program alumni, on which being listed is fully voluntary. We do not have “alumni files”.
Alumni members of the MAS ETH MPP can voluntarily create a user account on our Alumni Website. By signing up, users consent to their personal data being collected within the context described below.
Our website is hosted by ETH Zurich located in Switzerland.
5.2. Purpose of data collected
The Alumni Website is operated and your personal data is thereby collected in order for us to pursue the purpose of the MAS ETH MPP program of professionalizing mediation, in this case by promoting networking between alumni and to maintain and boost a sense of belonging with the peace mediation community of the program alumni.
Additionally, your information allows us to offer a search function, filtering alumni based on various criteria (such as gender, employer type, language skills, nationality, expertise, etc) and, so long as alumni have consented to their city of residence being visible to other users (see section 5.6), their profile will also showcase on a world-map with pins indicating the city of residence of relevant alumni (who have registered and consented to this information being visible to other registered users on the Alumni Website) for an easier overview.
5.3 Origin of data
We collect personal data directly from you as the user (or “data subject”).
5.4. Registration process, eligibility, and website privacy
The homepage which includes a short description of the website, announcements by MAS ETH MPP program staff and contact details of program staff is open globally. All other information – meaning, the alumni network, readings, and tools, are accessible only to approved registered users.
All alumni who register for the website need to be approved by website administrators from the MAS ETH MPP program before gaining access to its content (other than the homepage).
Only users who concluded the MAS ETH MPP program are eligible to register to the website and would be approved by the abovementioned MAS ETH MPP website administrator.
Alumni who register to the website would be asked to provide the mandatory and voluntary information listed below (see section 5.5).
5.5. Personal data collected on the website
When users register on the website, the following personal data is mandatory for registration:
- First name
- Last name
- Email address
- Nationality
- Country of residence
- City of residence
Users can also choose to include the following voluntary information:
- Program cycle
- Gender
- Mobile phone number
- Full address (street, number, postcode)
- Employer type – chosen from the following pre-determined list of options:
- Government
- International organization
- Local NGO
- Regional organization
- Private sector/Industry
- University/Research institution
- Self-employed
- Other
- Specific institution (choice from a predetermined list)
- Position
- Languages (choice from a predetermined list)
- Thematic expertise (choice from a predetermined list)
- Profile image (jpg).
- Religious institution
5.6. Visibility to other registered users
Upon registration, first name, last name, email address, and nationality are always visible to other registered users of the website.
For all other information:
- Users can choose (by ticking or unticking a checkbox upon registration and when editing their user profile) whether they want all other information to be visible to other registered users of the website or kept private.
- When choosing to have their “city of residence” visible, users are also consenting to appear on an alumni-network world-map with pins indicating the city of residence of relevant alumni (who have registered and consented to this information being visible to other registered users on the Alumni Website) for an easier overview. Users can always change their privacy preferences with regards to this information.
5.7. Deleting your account
Users can choose to delete their account at any time. When choosing to “delete account” this request will go to the website administrator and once approved by them the account and all user data contained therein will be deleted immediately.
MAS ETH MPP program management can delete account if users do not adhere to The Respect Code of Conduct of ETH Zurich.
5.8. Period over which we process personal data
All user data can be deleted immediately upon request. Without such a request, we will process your personal data for as long as we are obliged to do so by law (e.g. storage and archiving obligations) or our legitimate interests require this (e.g. enforcement of or defense against claims, assurance of IT security) or for as long as required for the purpose for which your data is collected or storage is required for technical reasons.
6. Data security
All communication via our website is encrypted through the user of the SSL/TLS encryption protocol. However, we would like to point out that even encrypted data transfer via the Internet always involves some security risks. We cannot guarantee that your data will be fully protected from third-party access.
7. Your rights as a user
Provided that the requirements of the data privacy legislation applicable in that particular case are met and that no legal exemptions are applicable, you have the following rights with regard to the processing of your personal data:
- on request, to receive, at no cost to you, information about whether we are processing your personal data and if so, what data
- to correct false or incomplete personal data
- to restrict the processing of your personal data
- to block your personal data
- to delete your personal data or make it anonymous
- to data transferability
- to revoke any consent given with regard to the processing of your personal data going forward
- to object to the processing of your personal data.
Please note that these rights may be restricted or excluded in specific individual cases under certain circumstances (e.g. to protect third parties or for reasons associated with trade secrets).
In order to enforce your rights as a data subject or should you have any questions about this data privacy statement and the processes it describes, you can contact the persons/bodies stated in the above Items 2.
We would be grateful if you could contact us if you believe that your data has been wrongfully processed. Alternatively, you can lodge a complaint with the responsible regulatory body. The regulatory body for data privacy in Switzerland is the external page Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (EDÖB). In the EU, complaints should be lodged with the respective national data protection authority.

8. Processing personal data linked to use of our website
8.1. Cookies
Our website uses what are known as “cookies”. Cookies are small text files, that are stored permanently or temporarily on your computer when you visit this website. Cookies have various functions. Numerous cookies are needed for technical purposes because certain website functions would not otherwise work (e.g. the shopping basket function or displaying videos). Other cookies are used to analyse user behaviour or show advertising (so-called “non-essential cookies”).
We only use cookies necessary for the basic website (wordpress) functionality.
You can set your browser to partly or completely deactivate cookies at any time and this will not impact your user experience on our website.
8.2. Website hosting provider
Our website is hosted by ETH Zurich on their servers (server location: Switzerland). Each time you visit our website, the hosting provider automatically collects and stores information (server log files), which are transferred by your browser. This includes the name and URL of the accessed file, date and time of access, volume of data, web browser and web browser version, operating system, the domain name of your Internet provider, the so-called referrer URL (the page from which you accessed our website) and the IP address. This usage data is used to detect technical problems, to ensure security and to statistically evaluate use of our website and thereby allow us to enhance it.
We process this data for the following purposes:
- to ensure that a connection to the website is established smoothly,
- to ensure convenient website usage,
- to analyse system security and stability,
- and for other administrative purposes and in the event of unlawful use of our website or our services.
Within the scope of application of the GDPR, this data is processed on the basis of our legitimate interest (Article 6 Paragraph 1 (f) of the GDPR) in accordance with the purposes listed above.
8.3. Links to other websites
Our website contains hyperlinks to websites belonging to third parties, which we do not operate or monitor. We are not responsible for their content or data privacy practices.
8.4. Communication options
Our website provides various means of getting in touch with us. This also includes e-mail, phone and post. Regardless of the channel used, we will save and process your request, including all personal data provided, in order to handle the issue you raise. You are responsible for the content you transfer to us.
Within the scope of application of the GDPR, this data is processed on the basis of our legitimate interest (Article 6 Paragraph 1 (f) of the GDPR) in order to handle requests sent to us.
9. Social networks (social media)
9.1. General
We maintain the profiles listed below in social networks and use these for marketing activities under certain circumstances. You will find linked graphics to the respective networks on our website. Clicking on a corresponding graphic will take you to the selected social network. Once you are there, the network collects and processes your information in the following context.
When you visit our profiles on social networks, under certain circumstances, personal data about you is collected. For example, if you are logged into your account on social networks and at the same time you visit our profile, the portal operator may assign this visit to your user account. But even if you have logged out of your account or if you do not have an account with the portal in question, your personal data may be collected. Enabling cookies, for example, may result in such data processing. Based on the data collected in this way, the portal operator can produce user profiles and show advertising linked to your interests. You will find more information about this in the respective data privacy statements of the portal operators.
Within the scope of application of the GDPR, we use social networks and process data linked to this usage on the basis of our legitimate interest (Article 6 Paragraph 1 (f) of the GDPR). In particular, we want such actions to enhance our international community and enable easier networking.
9.2. LinkedIn

9.3. Youtube
In both our Tools section of the website and in our Readings section, we incorporate videos hosted on YouTube platform.
As soon as you launch a YouTube video on our website, a connection is established to YouTube servers. When this happens, YouTube can see which of our pages you have visited. If you are logged into your YouTube account, you also allow YouTube to directly assign your surfing habits to your personal profile. You can prevent this by logging out of your YouTube account.
What’s more, once a video is launched, YouTube may save various cookies on your end device or use comparable recognition technologies (e.g. device fingerprinting). This allows YouTube to gain information about you. As a result, YouTube uses this information for purposes including collecting video statistics, improving ease of use and preventing improper conduct.
It may be necessary for other data processing to be initiated once a YouTube video has been launched and we have no influence over this.
